Helping hands and warm hearts in the city

DA NANG Today
Published: January 12, 2016

Despite the hustle and bustle of city life, there are many generous and kind-hearted residents to be found in Da Nang, and they are always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need in their residential area.

Residence group No 49 in Hai Chau District’s Nam Duong Ward is a typical example.  Its warm-hearted and willing residents are together taking care of a lonely 93-year-old woman.  The elderly lady is living in difficult circumstances as she is confined to her bed and unable to walk, feed herself or do anything.  Previously, she had shared her home with 2 other elderly ladies but they have now passed away.  Apart from helping with her daily needs and taking care of her health, her nice neighbours are also raising funds to ensure sufficient essential items for her daily life and to cover the cost of her funeral.

Another example is the residence groups Nos 34-35 in Ngu Hanh Son District’s My An Ward.  Members of the residence areas' chapters of the municipal Women’s Association have appealed for donations from generous donors and collected money from selling waste materials to assist the needy family of Mrs Mai in their residential area.  They have raised and collected 10 million VND which went to help the family overcome their difficulties.  Mrs Mai shoulders the burden of caring for a family that includes her husband, who is unable to work due to illness, and her 2 school-aged children.  She sells vegetables at a local market to cover the living costs of her family.  Mrs Mai said she was deeply moved by the kindness and help from her wonderful neighbours.

A residential community in My An Ward is jointly helping 2 orphaned children, Vy and her brother Hung.  One parent died when Hung was 6, and the other when he was 12.  Generous donations from their neighbours have gone to cover the cost of heart surgery for Vy when she needed an operation for a congenital heart problem.  The 2 orphaned children are now living in a new house built from donated money.  Thanks to the great concern and helping hands of their kind neighbours, Vy has just graduated from the accounting faculty of a local junior college and Hung is a Year 10 pupil with good study results at the Hoang Hoa Tham Senior High School.

The Fund for the Poor in Ngu Hanh Son District and local generous donors have helped Nguyen Ai Phuong, the daughter of a woman veteran who was a single mother.  The sudden death of Phuong's mother in 2012 left Phuong an orphan living in poverty, without any relatives.  After organising the funeral for her mother, her kind neighbours have been helping her with her studying and living costs, as well as making her living conditions better.

Phuong is now a first year student of the University of Economics in Da Nang.  She continues to receive financial aid from her neighbours to help her pursue her dreams for a better life in the future.

There are many other golden-hearted residents in Da Nang who are always willing to help local disadvantaged people.
