The statement above was made by the municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairman, Mr Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, at a meeting on Wednesday with some representatives from local relevant agencies.

As one of Da Nang’s priority infrastructure investment projects, the construction of the Son Tra waste water treatment plant is set to officially begin in December 2013, and it is scheduled to be completed by December 2014.  However, the management board of the priority infrastructure investment projects has been asked to do its utmost to ensure that the plant will be put into operation in June 2014.

Once operational the plant, which has been designed by CDM International Inc, will be able to treat 10,000m3 of effluent discharged from local seafood processing companies, and 41,000 m3 of domestic waste water each day.

The Alternating Double Filtration (ADF) method will be used for the effluent treatment in order to remove suspended solids and decrease the content of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand).  Special attention will be paid to solving odour problems in the waste water, and to the transport of thickened sludge to local landfill sites.

Addressing the meeting, Vice Chairman Tuan asked the local Department of Construction to make plans for planting trees around the plant.

The Department of Natural Resources and the Environment was also urged to encourage local enterprises to comply with the city’s effluent standards.  The city leader added that strict punishments will be imposed on violators, and their operations might be suspended in the case of multiple offences.
