Sustainable solutions needed for urban transport

DA NANG Today
Published: September 18, 2013

At a discussion on urban transport which was held in Da Nang on Tuesday, the Swedish Ambassador to Viet Nam, Ms Camilla Mellander, said she was deeply impressed by the city’s improved infrastructure.

The Swedish diplomat, however, also pointed out several shortcomings in Da Nang’s current infrastructure.  These concerned urban environmental pollution, waste water treatment, and especially sustainable development strategies for the local transport sector.  She remarked that her country’s Stockholm City would be willing to share its experiences in all the above-mentioned issues with the city.

The municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairman, Mr Phung Tan Viet, thanked the visiting guest and her accompanying Swedish transport experts for their useful advice about his city’s transport.

Vice Chairman Viet said that in an attempt to perfect the local transport infrastructure, between 2006 and 2012 his city had implemented 154 transport infrastructure projects, 113 of which were now complete and in use.  He noted that the city spends between 120 million USD and 140 million USD every year on improving local transport infrastructure.  He added that Da Nang is, however, still facing many traffic problems such as traffic accidents and congestion.

The city leader spoke highly of the active support from the Swedish government for the development of his city’s transport infrastructure.  He suggested that the Swedish government and businesses should offer even more help to the city to help it to reach its target of becoming an environmentally friendly city with sustainable transport development.
