Food prices rise after storm

Following Storm Nari, some of the local major markets like Con and Han markets still had their doors closed, whilst others saw only a few traders operating.  As a result, food prices increased by up to 3 times normal.

Fresh vegetables and fruit in Hoa Khanh Market doubled in price due to a scarcity of goods after the severe weather.  For example, the price per kg of French beans was 25,000 VND, small spring onions 26,000 VND, chillis 40,000 VND, squashes 15,000 VND, bitter melons 20,000 VND and tomatoes 12,000 VND.  Water morning-glory, vine spinach and mustard greens were priced at 10,000 VND per small bunch.

Hoa Khanh Market also saw a shortage of produce and a hike in seafood prices.  In detail, the price per kg of jack fish was 150,000 VND, goatfish 60,000 VND, red snapper 120,000 VND and dwarf snakehead 70,000 VND.  Some types of seafood, such as shrimps, cuttlefish, snails and crabs, were not available.

The Tuy Loan Market, a major market in Hoa Vang District, saw only a small number of buyers.

At 11am on Tuesday, the BigC Mall opened its doors and provided stable commodity prices for its customers.  Processed vegetables and fruit, fish, meat, and especially bread were best-sellers.

Most of the small local restaurants which offer meals such as rice vermicelli noodles and Vietnamese noodle soup were closed, but a few small grocery stores re-opened right after the storm.  At these stores, canned fish and meat as well as instant noodles increased by up to 1,000 VND per item.

The prices of food, especially fresh vegetables, are predicted to rise even further over the next few days.
