Hundreds of flood victims in Da Nang’s Hoa Vang District are now faced with not only the cost of repairing damaged property, but also debts because their dozens of tonnes of freshwater fish were swept away by the fast-flowing floodwaters.

43-year-old Nguyen Hanh from Hoa Khuong Commune’s Phu Son 3 Village said that his 2,000m2 aquaculture pond, with an estimated 2 tonnes of fish in it, had been destroyed.  His total estimated economic loss from the flooding is over 60 million VND.  Many other families in this commune are also involved in freshwater aquaculture, and they face the same situation as farmer Hanh.

Over one hectare of vegetables, being grown to meet the VietGap standards, in Hoa Phong Commune’s Tuy Loan Tay Village has been badly damaged.  The flood also eroded a rural road leading to this vegetable growing area.

The Head of the Hoa Vang District Office of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Huynh Van Thoi, said that the recent flooding had caused an estimated 12 billion VND in total property damage to his district.  The cost to agriculture is about 4.6 billion VND, including vegetables close to 600 million VND, aquaculture nearly 1.7 billion VND, and animal breeding around 550 million VND.
