A rise in Tet food prices

DA NANG Today
Published: January 07, 2014

Da Nang has seen an abundance of Tet goods since the start of 2014.  Although the purchasing power of local residents has remained weak, the price of a wide range of items has been increasing day by day.

Since early December last year, the price of rice and pork has risen by between 5 and 10%, whilst that of sugar, beans, and whole grains has increased by up to 3,000 VND per kg.

In addition, the price of fresh vegetables and fruit at local wholesale and retail markets has also increased significantly.  For example, the price per kg of carrots, broccoli and straw mushrooms has gone up by between 2,000 and 5,000 VND.  In addition, mandarin oranges and grapefruits are being sold at between 40,000 and 50,000 VND per kg instead of the usual 25,000 to 40,000 VND.

There has also been a significant increase in the price of dried seeds and jams.  The price per kg of unshelled cashew nuts ranges between 300,000 and 350,000 VND, chestnuts between 310,000 and 350,000 VND, whilst lotus seeds are from 320,000 to 340,000 VND.

As for dried seafood products, the price per kg has climbed by up to 9% compared with early December.  For example, small dried shrimps are being sold at 550,000 VND per kg, medium dried shrimps at between 600,000 and 750,000 VND, whilst large dried shrimps are 800,000 VND.

From now until Tet, the city’s inter-disciplinary inspection teams will increase their checks and inspections on the quality of goods, their displayed prices, and the safety and hygiene conditions of traders.
