After a nearly 40 year absence, the brand name “Ruou Can Phu Tuc” (rice wine drunk out of a jar through pipes) has been reintroduced in Phu Tuc Village, Hoa Vang District.

In June 2013, as part of the city’s rural upgrading programme, 8 people from Hoa Phu Commune, along with some of the local leaders, took a trip to the Tay Nguyen region.  Their purpose was to learn how to make “ruou can” with the aim of restoring the traditional craft of their ancestors.  This will help to preserve the distinctive cultural lifestyles of the mountainous areas, and also revive the value of festivals which are held annually in the Guoil (long) house of the Cotu ethnic minority people there.  Thanks to sales of “ruou can”, the living standards of the Cotu people, and the local residents as a whole, will be considerably improved.

The Hoa Phu Commune People’s Committee Chairman, Mr Nguyen Van Van, said that the registration of the “Ruou Can Phu Tuc” trade name will be completed this month.  He added that from November this year the wine will be sold in some of the city’s popular tourist areas to promote the brand name among both domestic and foreign visitors.  The areas will include the Hoa Phu Thanh entertainment area, the Suoi Hoa (Spring Flower) and Ngam Doi eco-tourism sites, and the Ba Na Hills Resort.

Mr Van also expressed hope that the villagers will learn how to make “ruou can”, and that Phu Tuc will become a traditional craft village in the near future.  Of course, he also hopes that the village’s wine will become popular with people both inside and outside the city.

Currently, visitors to the Phu Tuc Village can buy a jar of wine for only 120,000 VND for drinking or presenting to their relatives and friends.
