DA NANG Today
Published: February 03, 2014

Beautifully patterned kimonos, the Japanese traditional costume, boast unique designs and their sophisticated art-to-wear look.  The garments showcase the exquisite beauty and elegance of Japanese women as well as feature Japanese cultural traditions.  Despite living thousands of miles away from Japan, some highly-skilled tailors in Da Nang are interested in learning about the Japanese culture and improving their dexterity to make kimonos attractive works of art.

Located on Ton Dan Street, Cam Le District, the Nhat Hoang Anh Company has a 500 m2 factory which makes kimonos for export to Japan.  About 50 employees are involved in making them in a peaceful atmosphere, unlike the hustle and bustle of urban areas.

Air-conditioners are essential in the work rooms because they help to keep the fabric in good condition and prevent workers getting sweaty hands which could stain the cloth.  Measuring and cutting the fabric are the most important and difficult kimono-making techniques.  Making kimonos requires substantial hand-stitching and shows the passion and assiduity of the workers.

Over 1,000 kimonos, labelled with the brand name AHA-Kimono, are exported to Japan by air each week.  Main materials for making the kimonos are imported from Japan, along with the fashion accessories which include belts, wooden clogs and paper fans.
