The Deputy Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee, Mr Nguyen Xuan Anh, and some representatives of the municipal Department of Industry and Trade, recently reviewed results from the implementation of a project to boost the city’s services development towards 2015 with a vision to 2020.

Over the 2011 - 2015 period, the city is expected to see an average increase of 20.5% year-on-year in the total value of local retail sales of goods and services.  Meanwhile, the total export turnover of goods is likely to rise by 16.3 % year-on-year to an estimate of over 5.2 trillion USD during the same period.

As for the city’s items for export, there has been a positive shift from agricultural products and raw and pre-processed seafood to hi-tech, processed and manufactured products over recent years.  The productivity and the value of some of the items for export, such as textiles and garments, seafood, and electrical electronic equipment, have been improved considerably.

The city’s industrial and trade sector, however, has yet to effectively implement projects approved by the city’s government, and the results from these programmes have been much lower than expected.  In addition, there was a loose link between local relevant agencies, and the operation of local night markets has temporarily halted.  Local production activities have heavily depended on raw materials imported from foreign countries across the world.  In addition, the city has yet to gain positive results from its trade promotion, e-commerce and global economic integration activities, especially the programmes to boost trade promotion abroad as well as expand the city’s key export markets.

To resolve these problems, the city’s Department of Industry and Trade suggested that the city government should give sufficient funding to different parts of the project to boost the city’s services development.  Furthermore, the city should attach importance to boosting its trade promotion and export activities, with a focus on accelerating trade promotion programmes in Japan, the USA and the European Union.   The city will also consider merging the Trade Promotion Centre, the municipal Investment Promotion Centre, and the Tourism Promotion Centre into one large unit.
