The administration of Da Nang has appealed to the central government to cancel the license of a multimillion-dollar resort project developed by a Chinese joint venture as its location is sensitive in respect of national defense.

Dang Huan, head of internal affairs and legislation with the city government office, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Friday that Da Nang Chairman Van Huu Chien has proposed that the central government pull the plug on the Lang Co-Viet Nam international retreat project.

The project is located in Cua Khem Cape, a border area between Da Nang and Thua Thien-Hue Province, and is being developed by The Dieu Co. Ltd., a Chinese joint venture whose General Director is Chinese national Lu Wang Sheng.

Cua Khem Cape is where the Hai Van Mountain borders the Bien Dong. The Dieu Co. obtained an investment license for a 50-year term from Thua Thien-Hue authorities in October of last year.

Huan said the project was licensed even though it is situated in an area that is sensitive to national defense.

“This is against the planning of the central government,” he said.

“So Da Nang suggests that the government and relevant ministries and industries order Thua Thien-Hue to revoke the investment license of The Dieu Co.,” Huan added.

“The first step must be suspending the construction of the project.”

The Da Nang official, however, did not elaborate why the area is deemed sensitive.

The 200-hectare retreat complex is designed to include a 450-room five-star hotel, a 2,000-seat international convention center, a five-story block of 200 deluxe apartments and 350 villas, according to the investment certificate.

Total capital for the project is around US$250 million.

The first phase of the project, estimated to cost $115 million, will see construction of the villas and hotel.

The Thua Thien-Hue administration has invested VND50 billion ($2.35 million) in building a 5-km road leading to Cua Khem Cape to facilitate the development of the project.
