Due to the 4-day New Year holiday, Da Nang saw a sharp increase in the spending of local residents on food, fashionable clothes, and other consumer products.

During the holiday, shoppers crowded into the city’s markets and some of the city’s large supermarkets such as the BigC Mall, Co.opMart, and Intimex.  A number of attractive promotions and discounts had been available at these venues, which helped to lure a large number of shoppers.

The Head of Da Nang’s Veterinary Department, Mr Cao Xuan Thai, said that over the period, the city’s Da Son Slaughter House had seen an increase of between 10 and 20% in the total numbers of pigs, cows, and chickens.  In particular, the number of pigs and cows slaughtered each increased by 15% compared with normal days, whilst that of chickens went up by 20%.  In December 2014 there was a 25% month-on-month rise in the city’s imported frozen meat to between 800 tonnes and 850 tonnes.  This showed that the city had witnessed increased demand for food items from local residents.

Although local traders have ensured sufficient supplies of goods, food prices have risen due to the increased consumption over the holiday.  In particular, the prices of some types of vegetables and fresh fruits have gone up by between 3,000 and 5,000 VND per kg.  As a result, the price per kg of oranges has been at 45,000 VND, whilst that of star apples, Nam Roi grapefruits and rambutans are 35,000 VND.

As for fresh food products, a backyard chicken weighing around 1.2 kg is being sold at between 150,000 and 170,000 VND.  Meanwhile, the prices per kg of beef are ranging between 240,000 and 270,000 VND, snakehead fish between 70,000 and 75,000 VND, eel from 120,000 to 140,000 VND, frog 85,000 to 90,000 VND, and freshwater crayfish 150,000 to 165,000 VND.
