Efforts to promptly deploy Youth Park project
In 2004, Da Nang earmarked 225,263m2 of land and 89,390m2 of water in the Hai Chau and Cam Le districts for developing the Thanh Nien (Youth) Park project.
However, since 2005 the municipal authorities have also approved the implementation of other projects on this park site. These have included a driving range, a national centre for circus and synthetic arts, the Nguyen Khuyen Junior High School for Gifted Pupils, relocation areas for displaced families affected by the city’s development projects, and the expansion of the Hoa Cuong wastewater treatment plant.

The nearly 30 billion VND, 43,164m2 driving range at the park site was developed by the city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. About 2 billion VND from the city’s budget was also spent on purchasing equipment including golf balls and clubs for the venue. However, business at the driving range brought low benefits because this type of sport has yet to become popular with local residents.
Meanwhile, no construction work has so far been started on the 37,182m2 centre for circus and synthetic arts which was developed by the Viet Nam Circus Federation. Currently, the site looks sleazy with a private-run vehicle parking lot and areas for trading in ornamental features.
In a recent meeting, the Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee (PC), Mr Huynh Duc Tho, stressed the need to promptly develop the park into an attractive entertainment place for local residents.
Following recent approval from the municipal PC, 50 billion VND from the city’s budget will be spent on developing the park project. Of this, 10 billion VND will be used to build internal roads and areas planted with trees in the park and 13.2 billion VND will be on upgrading the pavements of the streets surrounding the park: Xuan Thuy, Cach Mang Thang Tam, Le Thanh Nghi and Dang Xuan Ban. The remainder will be spent on constructing a square, and areas for physical education and sports, camping and fishing, along with other facilities.
There will be a garden for strolling with lighting and water supplying systems at the construction site of the centre for circus and synthetic arts. Meanwhile, the existing building at the driving range will be upgraded into a gymnasium for indoor sports. Also, importance should be attached to appealing for donations from local organisations and individuals to develop the existing area where golfers practice their golf swing into mini tennis courts and football fields.
