Breakthroughs in local export activities

DA NANG Today
Published: October 15, 2015

In 2013, Da Nang’s total export turnover surpassed one billion USD, and then in 2014 the figure climbed by about 100 million USD.  This positive result has been mainly attributed to the city's effective support policies for local businesses over the past 5 years.

As of late 2014, there were about 300 export businesses locally, over 30 of which had earned more than 3 million USD per year.  Most notably, the export turnover generated by local foreign direct investment (FDI) companies now accounts for over 60% of the city’s total exports.  These remarkable achievements have re-affirmed the high efficiency and effectiveness of the local policies for developing more local industrial parks and attracting more FDI inflows into the city.  In particular, the ‘Year for Business 2014’ programme proved very effective, with numerous preferential policies introduced to help local businesses overcome their difficulties.

In addition, goods made by local private and household-based businesses, especially traditional handicraft-making establishments, now make up a high proportion of the city’s total number of products for export.

The city’s key export items now include rubber, textiles and garments, and seafood.  The city is aiming for a total of over 250 million USD of textiles and garments exports by the end of this year.  Of this total, over 50% is expected to be produced by the Hoa Tho Textiles and Garments Company.

To date, products from the Da Nang Rubber Company (DRC) have been sold in 33 countries worldwide.  Most notably, superweight tyres used in the mining industry have become among the company’s key items and dominate the market in much of Southeast Asia.  Last year, DRC earned nearly 4 trillion VND in revenue, and it contributed 305 billion VND to the city’s budget.  In addition, the company’s Steel Radial Truck Tyre Factory was opened last year, at a cost of over 2 trillion VND, in order to supply tyres for the home market.

Recent years have also seen many significant achievements in the production activities of local seafood exporters, including the Thuan Phuoc Seafood and Trading Corporation and Seaprodex Danang.  Currently, exports of aquatic products and seafood account for nearly 20% of the city’s total export revenue.

Many local seafood exporters have also invested money into upgrading their technologies in order to develop more high-value products.  Thanks to this, many of their high-quality products have been sold directly to many supermarkets in foreign countries worldwide.

Of special note, the quality of local products improved remarkably to help local businesses raise their annual revenues significantly over recent years.  Hence, local businesses have successfully expanded their production activities, as well as gradually improved the living conditions of their employees.

It is reported that high-class products now account for between 70 and 100% of the total number of products at the large local textiles and garments companies such as Hoa Tho, 29-March and Vinatex.
