Situated at the foot of the Marble Mountains in Ngu Hanh Son District’s Hoa Hai Ward in Da Nang, the Non Nuoc stone carving village has become very popular with lovers of fine art sculptures from both home and abroad.

According to the village’s Stone Carving Association, there are over 600 stone carving establishments in the village creating a total of more than 100,000 sculptures every year which produces a good revenue from sales.

However, the city has recently seen unfair competition between local production establishments, and the harassment of tourists has continued.

In an attempt to ensure the prestige of the village, in 2007 the Ngu Hanh Son District People’s Committee and the city's branch of the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry jointly organised a logo design contest and created the village’s own website.

However, the problems still persist and the sale of products at displayed prices has yet to be implemented synchronously, which has had a serious impact on the village’s reputation.

The Head of Ngu Hanh Son District’s Economic Office, Ms Ho Thi Thanh Thuy, said that if the problems are not resolved the village could lose the trust of its customers.  She remarked that in addition to relocating the production establishments, her unit and the district’s market management force would increase their checks at local production establishments in order to ensure that products are being sold at displayed prices.  Greater efforts will be made to stop the harassment of tourists, and training courses on sales skills and civilised trading practices will be provided for the owners of the local production establishments.
