Seminar on developing the handicraft industry
A seminar entitled ‘Handicrafts Value Chains – Current Situations and Solutions’ took place in Da Nang on Thursday. The event was jointly organised by the city’s Socio-economic Development Research Institute and the local branch of the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The event attracted over 100 representatives from relevant agencies, along with handicraft-making and trading businesses in Da Nang and Quang Nam Province. The focus was on analysing the current operational difficulties in the local handicraft villages, and finding effective ways to boost the development of the handicraft industry and its international integration in the years ahead.

Over recent years, the industry has played a significant role in promoting local economic development, creating jobs for local residents, and eliminating hunger and reducing poverty in the city.
However, most of the local handicraft-making establishments are small-scale due to limited financial capability, and they have paid little attention to developing their own brand names. Therefore, they find it very difficult to access domestic and foreign markets to advertise their products, and to boost the use of automated equipment in their facilities to increase productivity.
In an attempt to solve such problems, top priority will be given to creating closer links between handicraft-making establishments and their customers. Importance will also be attached to building a handicraft value chain extending from the producers all the way through to the consumers.
