Experts make suggestions for sustainable urban transport development

On Tuesday, a number of public transport planning experts from such foreign countries as the USA and the UK gathered in Da Nang for a seminar to share their experiences in sustainable urban transport development.  The event was co-organised by the Faculty of Bridge and Road Engineering at the city’s University of Science and Technology and the World Bank (WB) in Viet Nam.

Speaking at the event, the General Director of the UK-based Cevitrans Company, Mr James Tinnion-Morgan, pointed out the asynchrony between the urban planning work and the development of public transport systems in Da Nang, as well as in Viet Nam as a whole.  He advised that land for bus stations and parking areas should be earmarked close together to make them convenient for use by private vehicles and to provide easy access to public transport.

Mr Sam Zimmerman, an urban transport advisor for the WB, suggested that Vietnamese localities should focus on promoting the effective use of public transport management systems, issuing rules of public transportation, and building more public parking areas.  The intention would be to ease traffic congestion and ensure the effective operation of public transport systems.
