Singapore Focuses on Da Nang's Infrastructure Investment Opportunities
The Singapore-Da Nang Infrastructure Investment Forum 2016, to be held in Da Nang in June, is being organised to profile the city of Da Nang to Singapore-based companies, especially given the recent announcement that the city requires collaboration with international partners on 19 infrastructure projects.
Viet Nam has experienced profound changes that have transformed the country in the last 2 decades. This transformation is marked by a shift in the focus of change to its cities, transitioning to a phase of rapid urbanisation that offers unique opportunities for the country’s development. “The fundamental challenge for Viet Nam is to improve the affordability and efficiency of infrastructure investment “ remarks Shanmuga Retnam of the Asia Institute of City Management which is based in Da Nang.
Singapore ranks third among 101 countries and territories investing in Viet Nam, according to a report released in December 2015 by the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) under the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment. According to the report, Singapore has 1,379 valid projects in Viet Nam as of early this year, with a total investment of nearly 33 billion USD. Singapore has so far invested in 18 out of 21 sectors in Viet Nam with focuses on processing industries, manufacturing, and real estate. The projects are distributed across 44 of the 63 provinces and cities, including offshore oil and gas areas.
The forum being jointly organised by the Asia Institute of City Management and Da Nang’s leading industry bodies will focus on 3 key sectors:
Public Infrastructure - residential development, transportation, economic zones, water treatment plants;
Tourism Development - theme parks, hotels, MICE product development;
Educational Services - capacity development, learning solutions, early childcare infrastructure.
The by-invitation-only forum will be held on 23 and 24 June 2016 and attendees will comprise contractors, infrastructure service providers, investors, consultants and local government officials. The organisers expect participants to interact and form collaborations to develop their business interest in Da Nang as the gateway to Viet Nam. The Building Construction Authority of Singapore, the Singapore Business Federation, and the Young Entrepreneur’s Association of Singapore plan to organise delegations to attend the forum to identify projects and local partners.
