According to the Da Nang Management Board of Priority Infrastructure Projects, only over 33% of the construction work of the road tunnel at the intersection of Dien Bien Phu and Nguyen Tri Phuong streets has been completed to date.  It means that this project is unlikely to be put into use before 2 September to mark the National Day as was scheduled.

The main reason for the work being behind schedule is that the construction company has faced some difficulties due to the narrow construction site and unexpected complex geological conditions at the site, especially high groundwater levels and flowing sand.  To make the problem worse, the burgeoning traffic flow near the construction site has also adversely affected the construction work.

The Management Board has proposed that some necessary adjustments to the project’s construction should be made, with a focus on adjusting tunnelling techniques and the design of the water drainage system, building pumping stations, and implementing more landscaping works.

At a recent meeting with representatives from the Management Board, municipal People’s Committee (PC) Vice Chairman Nguyen Ngoc Tuan urged the construction units to make greater efforts to accelerate the progress of this important project and ensure its quality.

The Management Board was directed to work with other relevant local agencies to submit a report on its adjustment proposals to the municipal PC for approval no later than 30 July.

Also, another report on the detailed construction plans for the next few months should be made so that the city authorities can set a definite completion deadline for the tunnel, avoiding further delays.

Special attention should also be paid to increasing the inspection and monitoring of the construction work in a bid to ensure the technical quality of the project and guarantee the absolute safety of those involved in the work.

With just over 3 months to go to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2017 (AELW) in the city, hundreds of construction workers are racing against time working around the clock to complete the remaining items.
