It is a must-do to make reasonable adjustments to Da Nang’s traffic planning strategies as soon as possible, with a priority given to earmarking land fund for the development of static traffic systems, especially vehicle parking areas.

This was one of the major instructions made by municipal Party Committee Secretary Truong Quang Nghia at Tuesday’s meeting with other city leaders and representatives from relevant local agencies to together discuss traffic-related issues.

In reality, the number of vacant sites earmarked for the construction of car parking areas has decreased to only 16 from 167, as initially planned. Therefore, these locations must be kept intact in order to develop future parking lots.

The city Party chief underlined a need for the Department of Transport to identify traffic development strategies which will be added to the general adjustments to the local master urban plan towards 2030 with a vision to 2050 which was originally approved in 2013 by the national government.

The Department must also assist the municipal government in completing and submitting reports to the Prime Minister for approval about the pre-feasibility study of the Lien Chieu Port.

This is a major cargo port through which general and container cargo, and liquid products will be transported.

Work should start as soon as possible on a project for developing dock warehouses and container terminal facilities, and creating a transit route dedicated to container vehicles travelling from the Tien Sa Port to the soon-to-be-built Lien Chieu Port.

Approval has recently been given by the city authorities to ban all types of trailer and semi-trailer trucks from travelling on the Yet Kieu and Ngo Quyen streets between 4.30pm and 6.30pm every day. The intention is to reduce the number of traffic accidents and ensure the safety of road users on these streets during rush hours. The ban will officially take effect from 1 April.

In particular, the construction of underground passageways or overpasses on the coastal routes of Hoang Sa,Vo Nguyen Giap and Truong Sa should be taken into consideration for the purpose of serving tourists.

The city authorities are also considering the collection of fees from 4-wheeled vehicles parking along certain sections of some downtown streets in the coming time because a large number of cars have been found parked all day long.

The city is planning to open 6 new subsidised intra-city bus routes in early July in an effort to encourage local residents to use public transport services rather than their own personal vehicles with the aim of easing congestion.

The new bus routes will utilise a total of new 40-seater buses, connecting together such major mass commuter destinations as the former Han River Port, the inter-provincial coach station, the Marble Mountains Tourism Area, the 29 March Park, the Hi-Tech Park, and the Viet Nam-Korea Friendship Information Technology Junior College.

Also on Tuesday, Secretary Nghia paid inspection visits to the sites of a tunnel at the intersection of the Dien Bien Phu-Nguyen Tri Phuong streets, the Da Nang IT Park, and the extended Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.

The city top leader urged construction units to take timely solutions to radically resolve recent partial flooding inside the tunnel to ensure that such a matter might not happen again.

The Da Nang IT Park is one of the key projects for investment attraction; hence, greater efforts should be made to accelerate the progress of the construction work. Secretary Nghia asked the 131 ha 1st stage of this large-scale project to be completed by late this year.

It is reported that 85% of the land levelling work, 45% of internal traffic systems, and 45% of drainage systems, the planting of trees, and basic lighting systems have to date been completed.

As for the extension of the coastal Nguyen Tat Thanh route, construction units must exert greater efforts to ensure that the project will be put into use to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the city's liberation (29 March).
