The Da Nang authorities have asked for permission from the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport to build new T3 terminal of the Da Nang International Airport and grant around 3.8 billion VND from the national budget for this project soon.

The Da Nang International Airport is one of the three largest and one of the most important airports in the country, and it is also the major airport in the central region. Hence, it has played a vital role in ensuring security and defence, and promoting the socio-economic development of the region.

In addition, the airport has facilitated air passengers to travel to and from destinations in Viet Nam, and in foreign countries in Southeast Asia and Asia, especially contributing to the success of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2017 in the city.

According to an adjusted master plan for the Da Nang International Airport towards 2020 with a vision to 2030, the airport will be able to handle up to 13 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo annually by 2020. By 2030, the figures will increase to 28 million passengers and 200,000 tons of cargo annually.

However, the local tourism sector has seen a rapid growth in recent years. Currently, the airport handles 13.3 million passengers per year, exceeding the planned capacity by 2020 by 3 million.

It is expected that the number of air passengers to the city will go up by between 10 and 20% annually. As a result, the existing T1 and T2 terminals of the airport will not be able to handle the large number of air passengers in the coming few years.

Therefore, the construction of new T3 terminal which will be able to handle between 10 and 15 million passengers per year is very necessary for the city.
