The Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam (CAAV) is now making suitable adjustments to the planning outline of the Da Nang International Airport by 2020, with a vision towards 2030. Accordingly, it was proposed that the airport should ensure its annual capacity of handling between 28 and 30 million passengers by 2030.

According to the current plan, the airport will welcome 13 million passengers and handle 50,000 tonnes of cargo by 2020, and these figures will rise by 28 million and 200,000 tonnes, respectively, by 2030.

By 2030, focus will be on upgrading such facilities at the airport as taxiways, aprons, and passenger terminals, ensuring ground support equipment maintenance, flight management, fuel supplies, and targeting for the Category II (CAT II) and Category III (CAT III) Instrument Landing System (ILS) operations, and constructing other traffic infrastructure works.

Currently, there are 2 terminals at the airport, serving domestic and international flights. These terminals now receive over 150 domestic and international flights with the daily capacity of 15,000 air passengers. In recent years, it has reccorded the average annual growth rate of 15%.

However, it is the fact that the city's tourism sector has seen a rapid growth in recent years. Currently, the airport handles 13.3 million passengers per year, exceeding the planned capacity by 2020 by 3 million.

Besides, the number of air passengers to the city is expected to go up by 10 - 20% on average per year, which may lead to the overloading of the 2 existing terminals in the coming few years.

Given these facts, it was proposed that the third terminal with the annual capacity of 10 - 15 million passengers should be constructed, with simultaneously upgrading the existing terminals.
