Da Nang is asking for financial aid from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to implement the 2nd stage of an ongoing solid waste management project in the city, and construct a solid waste treatment plant in the Khanh Son landfill.

The statement was made by Director of the municipal Department of Planning and Investment Tran Phuoc Son at his Wednesday meeting with representatives from the JICA Yokohama Centre and the Yokohama authorities to evaluate the implementation of the 1st stage of the solid waste management project.

Also at the meeting, the host and his Japanese guests together discussed plans to organise a Da Nang trip by a business delegation from Yokohama with the intention of seeking investment opportunities in Da Nang in the coming time.

In their remarks, the Japanese visitors highly evaluated the great success of the 1st stage of the solid waste management project in promoting sorting and recycling across the city.

It is known that solid waste management is one of the priority projects funded by JICA under the 56 million yen (equivalent to 10.9 billion VND) Yokohama-Da Nang cooperation programme which aims to promote solid waste sorting at source, hererby helping to build Da Nang into an environmentally friendly city.

The 1st stage of the project has been deployed effectively in the wards of Hai Chau and Thanh Khe, receiving high praise from local residents.

The city has set a target of collecting 95% of solid waste for treatment over the 2019 – 2025 period, with at least 12% and 15% to be recycled and reused in 2020 and 2025 respectively.

There are main types of solid waste, mainly domestic solid waste for recycle and reuse, including paper, plastic and metal items; hazardous waste with toxic components including batteries, electric bulbs, and broken circuitsp; large, bulky domestic solid waste, and discarded construction materials; and food waste like vegetable and meat, leftover food, and eggshells.
