African swine fever drives up pork prices
Prices of pork in Da Nang are observed to be soaring in recent months as pork supplies have fallen due to African Swine Fever (ASF). Domestic supply of pork has been falling since the ASF broke out in February and spread to many localities nationwide.
Prices are reported on Wednesday in Da Nang’s major traditional markets to go up by 10% compared with previous week.
In particular, per kg of belly pork and pork spare ribs is being sold at the price of 180,000 VND, pork rump at 160,000 VND, and pork shoulder at 130,000 VND.
Meanwhile, the prices of beef have increased by between 5,000 VND and 10,000 VND per kg. Specifically, the price per kg of beef type 1 is 265,000 VND, whilst that of beef type 2 is 220,000 VND.
Prices for other meats, including chicken, duck and beef, are also expected to jump by up to 15%, putting further pressure on the discretionary spending of local consumers.
