Da Nang is seeing a 30% drop in the pork supply compared with the period before the African swine fever (ASF) crisis affected the city.

Currently, the city branch of the Viet Nam CP Livestock Joint Stock Company is supplying a daily average of 500 pigs to the market, a decrease of 300 pigs compared with the period before the ASF outbreaks. Meanwhile, the demand for pork is likely to be between 1,800 and 2,000 pigs in 10 days ahead of Tet.

The figures were released by the municipal Agency of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary at a meeting on Wednesday with representatives from departments, agencies, supermarkets and major food suppliers across the city.

Chaired by People’s Committee Vice Chairman Ho Ky Minh, the meeting aimed to find effective solutions to ensure sufficient supplies of essential Tet goods, including pork.

In his remarks at the meeting, Vice Chairman Minh urged food distributors to source a large volume of pigs from other localities to meet the increasing demand of local residents in the building up to Tet.

Also, the focus should be on stabilising pork prices at traditional markets, and encouraging residents to use more frozen meat at supermarkets and commercial centres in the city to reduce the dependence on traditional markets.

Mr Pham Dac Vinh, Director of the city-based Dac Vinh Company, said his unit has already stockpiled nearly 200 tonnes of fresh and frozen pork to satisfy local residents’ demand for Tet.

He also affirmed that his company is willing to participate in the city’s market price stabilisation programme in order to bring pork of a clear source of origin at reasonable prices to locals.

In addition to food suppliers and distributors, representatives from such major supermarkets in the city as Co.op Mart, BigC Mall, and Mega Market, pledged to ensure sufficient supply of pork for customers before, during and after Tet.
