According to the municipal Department of Industry and Trade, the gloomy trading ambience has been seen at traditional markets and supermarkets across the city amid growing concerns over the new virus.
The purchasing power of local consumers at traditional markets across the city has remained weak.
Such most-visited markets in the city as Han and Con have seen an 80% decline in foreign shoppers compared with the same period last year.
The amount of goods sold during the day at local supermarkets and trade centres has decreased by 50% against last year.
Mr Diep Hoang Thong Anh, the Head of the Management Board of the Hoa Cuong Wholesale Market, said the market received an average of between 170 and 190 tonnes of fruits and vegetables per day, a decrease of 45% compared with normal days.
He added the market has halted its imports of fruits and vegetables from China due to the coronavirus outbreak in this country. Therefore, it has sourced a large volume of vegetables and fruits from Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Hai Duong and some southern localities of Viet Nam in order to ensure the efficient supply for local residents. However, the purchasing power of local consumers at the market has still remained weak.
To cope with impact of outbreak, some retailers like Co.opmart, BigC Mall and LotteMart have offered online sales and home delivery in order to satisfy the demand of consumers and stimulate consumption market.
Ms Vu Huong Giang, a representative from the BigC Mall, said her mall is implementing a free delivery programme for orders valued at 200,000 VND and more within the radius of 10km. Also, 50% discount offer is being applied on thousands of essential goods, including vegetables, fruits, and fashionable items which are available for sale at the BigC Mall.
