Da Nang wet markets go digital
The freshly-launched 4.0 wet market model in Da Nang aims to promote digital transformation and IT application in buying and selling activities in general, as well as to accelerate the use of the non-cash payment method at local wet markets in particular.

Most recently, the Da Nang Department of Industry and Trade, and the city branch of the Military-run Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel Da Nang), have launched the 4.0 market model at the Con Market.
With this model, market-goers only need to scan the VietQR code or transfer money via phone number on the Viettel Money app to pay for purchase. All they have to do are to simply open the QR code scan app, scan the VietQR code, enter the purchase amount, and confirm to process the payment.
Convenient and easy to use
The owner of a stall selling dry spices and vegetarian food at the Con Market, Mrs. Le Thi Quynh Chau, highlighted the convenience of the use of e-wallet mobile app Viettel Money in making shopping easier and faster than ever before because tourists were often afraid to bring a lot of money to crowded places like wet markets.
“Buyers transfer money to my account, I pay for my goods through the app, so it's very fast" said Mrs. Chau.
Similarly, at Mrs Khuyen's ‘cha bo’ (beef paste) stall at the Con Market, customers are excited to try out the new app and they realise that contactless payments are extremely convenient.
Ms. Khuyen said that as before, every day when she went to the market, she had to bring a lot of change to give back to customers, not to mention after every day of use, a few banknotes were torn, and customers did not like to receive such old banknotes.
Currently, the elderly are not familiar with technological machines, so they have not used this application much. However, the cashless payment method is very preferred by tourists, 7 out of every 10 tourists scan QR code when making a purchase.
Replication of 4.0 wet market model
Currently, Viettel Da Nang has built deposit/withdrawal points in and around wet markets.
Notably, owners of over 1,000 stalls at Da Nang’s three major wet markets, namely Con, Han and Dong Da - have been provided with QR codes enabling users to make online payments through access with 37 banks and Viettel Money.
It is known that the wet market 4.0 model in Da Nang has received many positive feedbacks. So far, more than 1,000 small merchants in the 3 markets have registered for Viettel Money's payment acceptance services and the number is on the upward trend every day.
Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Industry and Trade Nguyen Huu Hanh remarked “After COVID-19, thanks to the level of convenience it offers, cashless electronic payments are booming and are among the key drivers of the digital transformation taking place in our economy and society”.
Facing that trend, in order to promote digital transformation and information technology application in trading activities in general and non-cash payment in particular at wet markets under the management of the Department of Industry and Trade, the Department has cooperated with Viettel Da Nang to deploy the 4.0 market model. All market stallholders and market-goers can buy and sell many items by scanning QR codes or transferring money via Viettel Money application.
In the coming time, the Department of Industry and Trade and Viettel Da Nang will continue to replicate this model in the remaining markets in the city to create favourable conditions for small traders and market-goers to get used to cashless payments.
Additionally, heed will be paid to carrying out a number of activities to support small merchants to put their products on the VOSO e-commerce platform in order to promote sales on social networking sites and e-commerce platforms.
A Viettel Post will be developed at a wet market to support small businesses or customers to conveniently and quickly send and receive goods.
“We hope the soon-to-be-organised programmes will bring many practical benefits to users, creating a spillover effect. We also hope to continue to receive the active participation of market stallholders and customers for these programmes" said Deputy Director Hanh.
