Planning system of fishing ports, storm shelters for vessels

The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Da Nang People's Committee on Friday jointly organize a nationwide workshop to comment on the draft planning for a system of fishing ports and storm shelters for fishing vessels during the 2021 - 2030 period with a vision towards 2050.

Addressing the workshop, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee Tran Phuoc Son said that, every year, the Tho Quang fishing port receives more than 19,200 turns of fishing vessels from Da Nang and other provinces.

As of March 2022, Da Nang had operated 1,229 fishing vessels with a total capacity of 395,224CV and the average capacity of 322CV/vessel, of which 582 are 15m or more in length.

The city orients to shift fishing from traditional methods to modern, advanced, high-tech applications, developing synchronous fishing infrastructure in the area of the Tho Quang fishing port, well organising fishery logistics services, becoming the fisheries service centre of the central region, promoting sustainable fishing practices, strengthening the protection and regeneration of aquatic resources, prohibiting destructive fishing activities and synchronously implementing training and changing professions for fishermen.

Over the past years, with the support of the national government, the city has invested in modern infrastructure of the Tho Quang fishing port and storm shelter site to gradually build it into a civilised and modern one associated with fishing tourism development.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that currently, the whole country has only 68 fishing ports and 74 storm shelters that are eligible and announced to be open to fishing vessels according to the regulations.

The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to assume the prime responsibility for planning the system of fishing ports and storm shelters for fishing vessels in the 2021 - 2030 period, with a vision towards 2050.

The consulting unit has prepared a draft plan with 157 fishing ports and 152 storm shelters for fishing vessels in 28 coastal Vietnamese provinces and cities.

At the workshop, representatives of localities and units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development discussed to clarify the planning locations of fishing ports and storm shelters for fishing vessels, as well as solutions for implementing investment mechanism, investment phases and list of possible prioritised projects.

According to the draft plan, the Tho Quang fishing port combined with a storm shelter site has the capacity to receive 300 fishing vessels/day with ships having a maximum length of 40m, and the volume of aquatic products through the port is expected to reach 100,000 tonnes/year.
