Unseasonal downpours cause heavy damage to Da Nang and other localities

During the unseasonal heavy rain that poured down onto Da Nang from March 31 to April 2, many roads and residential areas were partially flooded. Floodwater rose on all 3 river routes, namely Yen, Tuy Loan and Cu De and 1,176ha of rice, vegetables, crops, aquaculture ponds were submerged, drifted, and likely damaged.

Currently, Da Nang’s funtional bodies are, in a prompt fashion, preparing to respond to heavy rain and thunderstorms that are likely to occur in the coming days, in tandem with making damage statistics to propose support for those affected by the harsh weather.

During this prolonged unusually heavy rain, 300-400mm of rain was reported in the city, especially in Hoa Phu Thanh, Hoa Vang District up to 490.6mm and in Ba Na up to 631mm.

The city's drainage system was only capable of responding to rains of less than 50mm/hour, but at night on April 1, in many areas, the rainfall was higher than 50mm/hour, especially in Cam Le District with 58.4mm, Hoa Hai Ward in Ngu Hanh Son District with 78.8mm, Hoa Phuoc Commune in Hoa Vang District with 73.8mm.

Many roads and intersections were flooded locally, such as the intersections of Nui Thanh - Tieu La, Nguyen Van Linh - Ham Nghi, Tran Phu - Hoang Van Thu, and masterpieces at 383 Nui Thanh and 640 Trung Nu Vuong, along with the major streets of Quang Trung, Hai Ho, Ha Huy Tap, Le Duan, Truong Chinh, Le Van Hien, Nguyen Luong Bang (in front of the gate of the Hoa Khanh Industrial Park) and Ton Duc Thang.

Some residential areas in Hoa Khanh Nam Ward in Lien Chieu District, Thanh Khe Tay in Thanh Khe District), Trung Son Village in Hoa Lien Commune, Hoa Vang District were filled with water 1m deep.

Flooding caused heavy damanged to organic vegetable areas in Tuy Loan Tay Village, Hoa Phong Commune, Hoa Vang District), and submerged some roads, residential areas in Hoa Nhon Commune, Hoa Vang District and the low-lying section of ricverside Thang Long Road.

As reported by the Da Nang Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defence, as of the evening of April 3, unusually heavy rain had flooded 941.4ha of blooming and ripe, 243.8ha of vegetables, flowers and crops and washed away 19.8ha of aquaculture.

Deputy Director of the Department of Construction Vo Tan Ha said that the intensity of concentrated rain such as the recent heavy downpours exceeded the capacity of the city's drainage system. However, the flooded points have been handled with measures and experience.

More days of heavy rain forecast

On Sunday, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting issued a warning against toretnail rain accompanied by thunderstorm possible in many localities from Thua Thien Hue to Khanh Hoa provinces and the Central Highlands from April 4 to 6. The total rainfall is expected to be measured at 30-70mm in Thua Thien Hue Province, even more than 100mm in some places. Meanwhile,  Da Nang and its neighbour Quang Nam Province is forecast to brace for a rainfall of 70-120 mm, and more than 150 mm in some places, whilst Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh with 80-150 mm, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa with 100-200mm, and 50-100mm in the Central Highlands provinces. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of lightning, hail and strong winds.
