The Nam O snack street in Da Nang is attracting a large number of locals and tourists who long to visit and experience locally-made food.

Ms. Le Luong Hong Lien, a resident in Hoa Hiep Nam Ward, the owner of a stall trading in beverage and snacks, said that in the past, she ran at-home small-sized trade. Upon having learned about a fact that the Trung Thuy Group, the investor of the Nam O eco resort project would launch a programme under which  local residents  could be given support to change careers, she registered to participate in this programme without hesitation.

Fortunately, as one of the 50 people to receive support from Trung Thuy Group in terms of the provision of means of trading at this snack street, Lien said she would try to meet local requirements, such as ensuring food safety as well as keeping the environment clean and urban order.

“Touring for business here is not quite hard. We always encourage each other to try to create a healthy business environment in the spirit of mutual support and sharing. Every day, my stall operates from 6:00 p.m to 11:00, with an average income of VND150,000-300,000 VND every evening”, said Lien.

As observed, there are nearly 30 snack dishes sold along the Nam O snack street, such as spring rolls, seaweed rice rolls, grilled seafood, grilled meat on skewers, ‘banh beo’ Vietnamese bloating fern-shaped cake), grilled corn, baked rice paper, ice cream rolls, milk tea, coffee, chilled bottled water, smoothies, Thai banana cakes and mixed jackfruit. Especially, their prices are affordably-paid and publicly displayed.

Trinh Thi Khanh Hong from Yen Thanh District, Nghe An Province, working at Whitex Garment Co., Ltd., Hoa Khanh Industrial Park, said that she used to stay at home on weekends because there was little space to play and suitable for entertainment purposes. Since the snack street opened, on weekends, she and her close friends come here to enjoy the relaxing sea breeze and enjoy some quite affordable food.

According to Hong, the cuisine here is relatively delicious, and dishes are vere cheap, from VND10,000 - VND25,000 /apiece, quite suitable for the thrifty lifestyle of workers.

As affirmed by Ms. Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Chairwoman of Hoa Hiep Nam Ward People's Committee, the Nam O snack street carries its mission of meeting the needs of entertainment, relaxation and enjoying coastal cuisine. Implemented on a small scale, with little investment, suitable to the living  conditions of fishing villagers, the Nam O snack street is attracting traders who want to tout for business.

The Hoa Hiep Nam Ward administration is highly committed to creating the most facourable possible conditions for people to do business at this place.

At the same time, it is hoped that the Nam O snack street will help promote the traditional Nam O fish sauce brand through the use of fish sauce in food processing.

To ensure food safety, the ward’s authorities are partnering with relevant units to step up training in business knowledge, service skills and the handling of common situations arising during serving tourists.

In particularly, traders are highly recommended to make a switch to the use of tools with environmentally-friendly, easy-to-decompose materials from single-use plastic products.

Currently, each vending cart has clearly written information about business items for diners to easily identify and traders must all wear uniforms, making it easy for authorities-made supervisions.

Mr. Nguyen Ha Bac, the Secretary of Lien Chieu District Party Committee, said that putting Nam O snack street into operation is part of the livelihood support programme for people affected by the arrival of the Nam O eco-tourism area project.

The goal is to help the project-affected residents change their professions from fishing to tourism services, and at the same time, creating new products more highly attractive to visitors, especially promoting night-time tourism.
