There is a startup project by a woman from Thanh Khe District that might sound unusual at first. However, once you understand the concept, the creator's concerns, and her creativity, the project's significance in environmental protection and green transition becomes clear. It aims to address the issue of pollution caused by conventional plastic products by offering eco-friendly alternatives, thereby helping to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment.

The project, titled "Handcrafted Loofah Products - Natural Products," is the brainchild of Vo Thi Ngoc Thu, residing at 49 Phu Loc 19 Street, Thanh Khe Tay Ward, Thanh Khe District, Da Nang. Her project won first place in the "2024 Innovative Women's Startup Ideas" competition organized by the Thanh Khe District-level Women's Union.

The project originates from the idea of utilising natural materials, specifically loofah fiber, to produce practical, environmentally friendly products such as foot massage slippers, pet toys, dishwashing sponges, bath straps, and more. These products contribute to reducing plastic waste and environmental pollution.

According to the creator, she chose loofah to start her business because it is an easy-to-grow plant, fast-growing, and adaptable to various climate conditions. The raw material is abundant and stable. The production of loofah fiber products employs environmentally friendly methods and technologies, does not emit harmful substances, and consumes little water during the manufacturing process.

The loofah material area that Thu has established for cultivation and processing is located along the Thu Bon River in Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam. To ensure a stable supply of raw materials, her production facility has contracted with local farmers, guaranteeing them an outlet for their loofah crops.

The loofah processing includes harvesting mature loofahs, peeling, cleaning, drying, flattening into sheets, and cutting and sewing them according to product requirements. Loofah fiber has excellent recyclability, so the products have a long lifespan and reduce resource waste.

Additionally, loofah products have diverse applications in daily household use, such as dishwashing sponges, soap pouches, and bath sponges.

From a macro perspective, Ms Thu's startup project with loofah fiber has promoted the shift from plastic products to those made from natural materials, an essential step in reducing the environmental disadvantages associated with plastic. It also fosters a closer connection with and love for nature, while creating opportunities for the community to participate in activities related to environmental protection and respect for nature.

By using eco-friendly products, consumers, especially women, will have a deeper awareness of the importance of environmental protection and nature conservation. The project also contributes to educating the community about environmental consciousness through promotional and communication strategies. Raising awareness about the impact of consumer behaviour on the environment and climate can encourage positive actions from both consumers and businesses.
