Favourable weather
These days, the enthusiastic working ambiance has been recorded at the Duong Son flower growing area in Hoa Chau Commune, Hoa Vang District. Farmers here have begun planting chrysanthemums for Tet since the middle of the 8th lunar month.
Mr. Ly Phuoc Dang, Head of the Duong Son Flower Production Cooperative, said that the Duong Son flower growing area has an area of about 4.5 hectares with 19 households growing flowers and ornamental plants. At this time, the households mainly grow chrysanthemums, marigolds, dahlias, and hanging flowers for the Tet crop.
This year, the Agro-Forestry-Fishery Promotion Centre under the Da Nang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has supported farmers citywide with 2,150 pots of raspberry chrysanthemums for Tet production.
Similarly, 7 households in Thanh Khe Tay Ward, Thanh Khe District, are growing about 3,000 pots of chrysanthemums of all kinds.
According to the Chairwoman of Thanh Khe Tay Ward Farmers' Association Le Thi My Hanh, the locality is the only place in the district to grow chrysanthemums to supply the Tet market. The Association regularly recommends that farmers proactively grasp the weather and pest situation to have effective preventive measures and care for the plants well.
Strengthening support for farmers in difficulty
To prepare for the 2025 Tet flower crop, Mr. Nguyen Van Quy from Hoa Xuan Ward, Cam Le District, plants about 2,000 pots of crystal chrysanthemums and tests about 150 pots of new types of chrysanthemums such as purple chrysanthemums and brocade chrysanthemums.
According to Mr. Quy, the abovementioned new types of chrysanthemums are quite expensive and difficult to grow, but if they grow and develop well, they will be very popular in the market.
"This year, I have invested a lot of money to produce new types of flowers, but I am also very worried about the complicated development of weather and pests in the coming time. Therefore, I hope to receive support in term of flower growing techniques from specialised units and experts" said Mr. Quy.
Aside from traditional chrysanthemums, in the coming time, farmers will continue to plant hanging flowers, lilies, gerberas, cockscombs, etc.
To improve the quality of Tet flowers, the Farmers' Association of Hoa Xuan Ward plans to coordinate with relevant units to train, improve knowledge, and transfer agricultural science and technology to 50 flower-growing households in the locality.
In addition, the Association has mobilised the Economic Office of Cam Le District to support two members in difficult circumstances with seeds of raspberry chrysanthemums, copper chrysanthemums, and yellow chrysanthemums with a total cost of VND 60 million.
The Chairman of the municipal Farmers' Association, Nguyen Huu Thiet, said that in the coming time, the weather will continue to be unpredictable, so flowers and ornamental plants are very vulnerable to damage, waterlogged roots, pests and diseases. Therefore, farmers' associations at all levels should strengthen their grasp of weather and disease situations to advise farmers on preventive measures, he added.
In the coming time, a number of training courses will be organised to help farmers improve knowledge and techniques of growing flowers and ornamental plants. Moreover, loans from the Farmers' Support Fund will be offered to farmers in difficult circumstances to expand production scale.
