Recognising the importance of applying biotechnology in product research and commercialization, in recent years, the Hoang Phong Dana Co.,Ltd in Hoa Minh Ward, Lien Chieu District has continuously launched quality medicinal products, meeting the needs and tastes of the market.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien, the company’s CEO said that during the production and business process, she realised that many essential oils in the world are imported from medicinal herbs in Viet Nam but the selling price is very high.
Meanwhile, Viet Nam possesses a diverse and rich source of medicinal herbs. In particular, the South Central Coast region is identified as one of the eight key medicinal herb regions of Viet Nam with the top quality of indigenous medicinal herbs.
With the orientation of becoming a pioneer in researching, developing indigenous resources and inheriting and upgrading traditional medicinal herbs of the people, the company has cooperated with 15 farming households in the central region, covering more than 80 hectares of medicinal herb growing area to produce quality medicinal herbs.
Up to now, the company’s brand has been positioned with more than 4,000 retail points nationwide, cooperating with reputable brands and pharmacy systems such as Long Chau, An Khang, Manh Ty, and chain stores selling products for mothers and babies.
The development of enterprises faces many challenges, including the problem of managing the supply of large quantities of medicinal herbs with consistent quality; the organization of R&D (research and development) is still difficult.
It also struggles to find ways to catch up with consumer trends, standards of each market; application of digital technology in production and business; developing into an enterprise that creates social impact to participate in the global supply chain.
“Through cooperation with the Da Nang Biotechnology Centre, the difficulties of enterprises have been partly resolved such as ensuring R&D; perfecting production processes, quality control; supporting the connection of experts and partners. This is also a guarantee of the company’s commitment to quality towards its customers”, Ms. Lien said.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong, the Manager of the Swiss Entrepreneurship Programme Viet Nam in Da Nang, biotechnology startups play an important role in promoting the development of biotechnology in Da Nang.
The programme has coordinated with the Da Nang Biotechnology Centre in researching and designing a biotechnology business incubation programme with the aim of creating new biotechnology businesses through incubating startups, improving competitiveness; developing the socio-economy, solving problems related to health - agriculture - environment; innovating and developing technology from creating a creative environment, providing financial and technical support, connecting with experts, thereby enhancing Da Nang’s position in building the brand of an innovative city.
However, for biotechnology startups to develop, it is a need to develop specific strategy, related to startup support services, innovation networks, international connections and intellectual property resources.
According to Dr. Pham Chau Huynh, Director of the Da Nang Biotechnology Centre, to promote the development of the biotechnology sector in Da Nang and the Central Viet Nam - Central Highlands regions, it is necessary to focus on building a strong innovative startup ecosystem.
In particular, Da Nang needs to take the lead in building a model for developing specialised biotechnology business incubation centres, providing comprehensive support for startups and businesses from research to production and commercialisation.
There should be a priority policy for investment in upgrading infrastructure and equipment for biotechnology research and development; promoting cooperation and consultation with international and inter-regional partners in research and technology transfer, and promoting linkages between provinces and cities in the region to take advantage of the strengths of each locality.
In addition, heed should be paid to strengthening the linkage between research and production; developing a mechanism to encourage businesses to invest in R&D, creating conditions for scientists to access production practices; perfecting policy mechanisms to promote innovation and commercialisation of biotechnology products; developing high-quality human resources, attracting leading experts, building specialized training programmes on biotechnology at universities in the region.
