Impressive French architecture still evident in the city

DA NANG Today
Published: November 11, 2013

Da Nang was named Tourane by French troops during the 62 years of the French colonial period from 1888 to 1950.  During that time, Tran Phu Street was called Rue Jules Ferry, whilst Bach Dang Street was called Quai Courbet.  Both streets boasted a number of important government buildings, including the security, administration and economic agencies.

These buildings, with their French-style architecture, still remain to show their artistic, historical and cultural values.  They include the People’s Council and the People’s Committee buildings, known as Da Nang City Hall in the past, the Appeal Court of the Da Nang Supreme People's Court, the Da Nang Ship Chandlers Corporation, the city’s branch of TNT Vietrans Express Worldwide Viet Nam, and the Department of Finance buildings.

All the above are now protected by the city authorities as fine examples of French architecture, as are three others - the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture on 2 September Street, the Phu Dong Primary School on Yen Bai Street, and the Da Nang Women's Union building on Pasteur Street.
