The Vietnamese team on December 7 started its medal-seeking journey at the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar with a gold medal earned by Wushu artist Duong Thuy Vi.

Vi got the country off the mark after defeating her rival in the women’s Taolu Jianshu event.

Meanwhile, Bui Minh Phuong bagged the silver medal in the Nanquan event and Tran Xuan Hiep grabbed a bronze medal in the men’s Taolu Changquan event.

Viet Nam  has sent a combined team of 750 athletes and officials to the Games with a hope of bringing home at least 70 gold medals in the region’s biggest sports event, which will last until December 22.

At the last SEA Games held in Jakarta two years ago, Viet Nam  ranked third, winning 96 gold medals, trailing behind the host Indonesia with 182 and Thailand with 109.
