Viet Nam have finished in fourth place in the women’s football event of the 17th Asian Games (Asiad) organized in South Korea after losing 0-3 to the hosts in the playoff game for the bronze medal on Wednesday.

Three goals in the second half gave the Koreans the third place in the women’s football category at the 2014 Asiad, which kicked off on September 19 and will close on October 4 in Incheon.

After a goalless first half, South Korean midfielder Kwon Hahnul blasted a shot, sending the ball flying into the far corner of the Vietnamese goal frame to open the scoring in the 10th minute.

The opener stemmed from an attack in the midfield area in which the midfielder had the ball over 20 meters from the Vietnamese goal.

Two minutes later, South Korea doubled the lead to 2-0 following a mistake by Vietnamese goalkeeper Kieu Trinh.

Letting the ball bounce out of her reach, Trinh watched midfielder Jung Seol-bin rushing in to follow up with a close-range cushion to net the second goal.

Goalie Trinh repeated her mistake in the 67th minute, letting the ball bounce out of her reach again and striker Park Hee-young did not miss the chance to convert it.

Contrary to what happened in the second half, Kieu Trinh had been in prominent form in the first half when she kept a clean sheet despite dangerous attacks by the hosts.

In the 15th minute, the ball found striker Yoo Younga in the middle area in front of the Vietnamese box. She swiftly shot it toward the corner of the goal frame. However, Trinh timely responded by falling to catch the ball.

In the 29th minute, South Korea were awarded a free kick just outside the Vietnamese box. Striker Park Hee-young sent the ball flying overhead toward the high corner but Trinh displayed an outstanding performance and parried away the shot.

The Korean women then began pushing up their attacking tempo. In the 35th minute, Yoo Younga drove the ball to beat the Vietnamese goalkeeper but her shot failed to do so to the crossbar.

In the 41st minute, Korean defender Jeon Gauel made a cross passing just five meters from the Vietnamese goal line. It was lucky for Viet Nam when Korean midfielder Kwon Hahnul darted into the box and just cushioned it wide.

Viet Nam lost 0-3 to Japan and North Korea defeated South Korea 2-1 in the semifinals two days ago.

The finale between North Korea and Japan will take place at 6:00 pm (Viet Nam time) today.
