Published: November 24, 2014

The Museum of Da Nang recently received 36 valuable objects from local residents in order to celebrate the 10th Viet Nam Cultural Heritage Day (23 November).  The donated items will further advertise the city’s special cultural and historical values.

Of these objects, 23 were donated by senior revolutionaries who participated in the country’s anti-American resistance war.  They include an embroidered handkerchief, radios, canvas bags, hammocks, umbrellas, backpacks and rubber sandals.  Meanwhile, another 12 items were given by people who had served in an international mission in Cambodia aimed at helping the Cambodian people abolish their genocidal regime.  These war souvenirs included army uniforms, first-aid kits and photos of Cambodia’s Angkor temple complex.

Amongst the donators was Mr Pham Trung Kien who was a former commando during the war and is now a member of the city’s Former Patriotic War Prisoners’ Association.  He donated an S-shaped model of a map of Viet Nam, including on it the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos, and a hand-embroidered handkerchief, both of which were made by himself.  The model was made of valuable stamps which feature the country’s cultural and historical values and national heroes, whilst the handkerchief, entitled “Aspiration For Peace”, was embroidered during his imprisonment in the city’s former Kho Dan (Ammunition Depot) jail during the war.  A postcard showing the map of Viet Nam which had been released during the war was handed over to the museum.

The other donated item was a self-turning table donated by the Most Venerable Thich Hue Vinh, who is the Head of the city’s Quan The Am (Avalokitecvara) Pagoda.  The wooden table can turn in clockwise or anti-clockwise directions whenever people place their palms together on the table.  The item shows the talent of carpenters from Quang Nam Province.
