On Monday, archaeologists from the Da Nang Centre of Cultural Heritage Management and the Viet Nam Archaeology Institute carried out the excavation of a 100m2 area at the Khue Bac village communal house in Ngu Hanh Son District’s Hoa Hai Ward.

A number of artifacts, including fragments of pottery and stones, were found at the site.  The archaeologists remarked that the findings look similar to those found during an excavation in 2001 at a location about 10 metres away from this present site.

The new-found artifacts were uncovered in 2 layers at the excavation site. The lower layer featured items from the Sa Huynh culture which thrived between 1000 BC and 200 AD.  Meanwhile, the artifacts found in the upper layer may be from the early Champa culture dating back to between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.

In particular, a number of old Chinese coins were also discovered at a depth of about 20cm below the ground surface.   It is believed that they are either from China’s Song or Ming dynasties, and that therefore Chinese people conducted trade activities in the city in the 17th and 18th centuries.
