Hoang Sa Exhibition House – a 'living witness' re-affirming national sovereignty over the islands
The Hoang Sa Exhibition House is being built on an area of 1,200m2 at the corner of Hoang Sa and Phan Ba Phien streets in Man Thai Ward of Son Tra District. It will cost about 40 billion VND from the city’s budget.
An architectural design called ‘Viet Nam’s Sovereign Seal’ was chosen for the house. It was created by a group of 3 architects from Japan’s Wright Architecture Company - Fuminori Minakami from Japan, and Viet Nam's Tran Quoc Thanh and Nguyen Huy Quang.
The exhibition house will display hundreds of documents, photos and artifacts about Viet Nam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago from old Vietnamese bibliographies issued before and during the feudal Nguyen Dynasty. There will be historical evidence which proves Viet Nam’s recent publicity about the archipelago over the 1858 - 1945 period and Viet Nam’s legitimate sovereignty over the islands during the 1945 - 1974 period.

Also on display will be about 200 maps and historical documents which have been published by other countries around the world, including China, affirming Viet Nam's legitimate claims over the archipelago. Included are maps, which were issued under China’s Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties and in the early 20th century, showing China's southern-most border as being Hainan Island. In addition there are publications and maps which were published by Western countries between the 15th and 16th centuries and until after 1975 which all assert that the Hoang Sa archipelago belongs to Viet Nam.
Also, numerous photos featuring the practical activities of the Hoang Sa District People’s Committee over the archipelago from 1974 until now will be displayed at the house. They include the ceremonies to name Hoang Sa street and receive books and artifacts from domestic individuals and organisations affirming the nation's legitimate sovereignty over the archipelago, and a get-together for those who served on the archipelago before 1975.
Many photo exhibitions and scientific workshops have been organised on Viet Nam’s ownership of the archipelago, and there have been competitions with ‘Homeland's Sea and Islands’ as their themes. These drew a great deal of attention from people from all walks of life, but especially the younger generation and foreign visitors.
The Chairman of the city’s Historical Science Association, Mr Bui Van Tieng, remarked that there is nowhere more suitable than Da Nang for the Hoang Sa Exhibition House project because the archipelago has been under the administrative management of the city for the past half-century.
The date of 19 January 1974, when China completed their military occupation of the beloved Hoang Sa archipelago, has remained deep in the minds of local residents for the last 40 years and they are still reminded every day. Hence, the exhibition house will be considered as a ‘living witness’ to re-affirm Viet Nam’s sacred sovereignty over the archipelago. In addition, it will help to educate local residents, especially the younger generations, about patriotism and raise their sense of responsibility in the struggle to protect the nation's sea and island sovereignty.
