A city of international events

DA NANG Today
Published: February 06, 2016

Over recent years, the Da Nang authorities have made every effort to make Da Nang a city of international-level events.  The focus has been on hosting international events, upgrading the infrastructure, and promoting the city’s name.

Thanks to this, the city has emerged as an attractive destination for international events and festivals.  These include the biennial Da Nang International Fireworks Competition, the annual Da Nang International Marathon, the Da Nang International Paramotor Competition, and the VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Viet Nam Triathlon.

Most notably, Da Nang is an official sponsor and host port for the ongoing 2015 - 2016 Clipper Round the World Race.  It is the first locality in Southeast Asia to participate in the race with its team named ‘Da Nang-Viet Nam’.

According to the organising board, the race is attracting a great deal of attention from 4.4 billion people worldwide.  As of 4 September 2015, there had been a total of 118 stories written about the ‘Da Nang-Viet Nam’ team, attracting over 106 million readers.  The values of advertising and public relations to Da Nang are over 204,000 and 614,000 British pounds respectively.

Race 7, which has already begun from Airlie Beach, Australia, and will finish in the city on 17 February, has ‘Da Nang - New Discovery of Asia’ as its title.  The Clipper Race fleet is expected to stay in Da Nang for 10 days.  During that period, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in various arts and support programmes in order to help them understand more about the culture and people of Da Nang.  This will be one of the greatest opportunities for Da Nang to advertise its image to international friends, and affirm the city's prestigious position in the world.

Recently, the city has been chosen by the Olympic Council of Asia to host the 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG 5) from 24 September to 3 October 2016, and it is expecting to welcome nearly 4,600 athletes from 45 countries and territories in Asia.

The 25th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit will take place in the city in October 2017.  By mid-January, in a mere 0.47 seconds, Google had returned about 49,400 results when searching using the key words 'APEC 2017 in Da Nang'.  This proves the special attraction of the event and its influence on the promotion of the city’s name.

Not surprisingly therefore, the city took top spot in the online travel review site TripAdvisor’s 'Destinations on the Rise in 2015' award, and was also ranked as the 6th most improved city in the world to visit in 2015 by THERICHEST magazine.  Previously, it was also ranked 7th and 8th respectively amongst the top 10 most attractive destinations in Asia in 2013 and 2014 by the readers of Smart Travel Asia, the leading regional online travel magazine.

In addition, resorts and hotels have consolidated their own brand names, which has helped to further the development of Da Nang’s tourism sector and advertise its image to the world.  In particular, the 5-star InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort has won the 'World’s Leading Luxury Resort' award for 2 consecutive years - 2014 and 2015.
