The project is part of a series of activities in preparation for the 20th anniversary of the city’s recognition as a centrally-governed city on 1 January 2017, and the 20th birthday of the district next year.

The Vice Chairman of the district’s People’s Committee, Mr Nguyen Hoa, remarked, “The placement of the sculptures aims to honour the national historical figures who were well-known revolutionary leaders, heroes, martyrs and artistes.  Also, it educates local residents, especially the younger generations, about patriotism and cultural values of the Non Nuoc stone carving village which was officially recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014.  The sculptures will help to make the district, and the city as a whole, more attractive to local residents and visitors in the years ahead.”

The selected streets are Vo Nguyen Giap, Le Van Hien, Ho Xuan Huong, Tran Dai Nghia, Minh Mang, Huyen Tran Cong Chua, Su Van Hanh, Vo Chi Cong and Mai Dang Chon.

The sculptures, estimated to be worth between 200 million VND (8,975 USD) and 300 million VND (13,463USD) each, will be paid for by donations from local organisations and individuals.

The statues will be ingeniously carved, from either marble or granite, by skilful carvers from the stone carving village, and they will be made to the same scale.  They will be mounted on 2.2m-high pedestals on which the biographical information of the historical figures and the name of the project’s sponsors, developers, designers and sculptors will be carved.

In a similar vein, a carved stone plaque will also be erected alongside Ngu Hanh Son street.  The 1.8m-high monolith will feature a map of Ngu Hanh Son District, as well as its geographical and historical information.

Last year, stone name plates were placed on the district’s major streets, including Nguyen Duy Trinh, Non Nuoc, Huyen Tran Cong Chua and Su Van Hanh.  This was part of a series of activities to mark the district’s 5th Party Congress for the 2015 - 2020 tenure which took place in June 2015.

The installation of these plaques has made the district’s urban landscapes very different from those of the other local districts, as well as left a good impression on both locals and visitors as they visit the Marble Mountains.
