During the summer school holiday, Da Nang’s libraries are often crowded with local pupils and students.

The city’s General Science Library at 36 Bach Dang is a typical example.  During the holiday, the library opens its doors to the public between 7.30am and 8.30pm from Tuesday to Sunday each week.  Children visiting the library are provided with free membership cards and, as a result, it welcomes a daily average of 200 children.

In addition to reading books in the library, local children can take books home.  To promote a reading culture amongst local children, the library plans to offer prizes during the holiday to those who return their borrowed books on schedule, and those who read the most books.

Mr Pham Hong Thai, Director of the library, said “The library is now home to over 27,000 books and documents suitable for people of different age groups.  In particular, the large number of children’s books aims to meet the reading demands of local children.  Apart from reading books, children have the opportunity to participate in numerous fascinating entertainment activities.  Included are a storytelling contest, free film screenings, and an English book reading programme on Saturdays.”

10-year-old Thu Thao from Thanh Khe District’s Thanh Khe Dong Ward said, “I often visit the General Science Library during my summer holiday.  I like the library’s cool and beautiful space.  In addition to reading books, I can watch cartoon movies and take part in entertainment activities at the library”.

The S.hub Sharing Space will be put into use on the 1st and 2nd floors of the library in late July.  Funded by the Samsung Vina Electronics Company, the space will be installed with advanced equipment such as smart interactive screens, tablets and computers.
