The positive results have been mainly attributed to great efforts of talented athletes, and enthusiastic coaches who have been dedicated to training sports talents in order to bring success to the sports sector.

However, the city’s sports sector is in need of more skilled coaches in a bid to promote its development in the years ahead.

The Director of the municipal Athlete Training Centre, Mr Dang Dong Hai, said his centre now has more than 90 coaches. Amongst them are 1 senior and 13 main coaches. Over 80 coaches are holders of bachelor and masters degrees, but the number of skilled coaches is still modest. The majority of the coaches are former athletes who have gained outstanding achievements at national and international sports events.

Director Hai noted the centre’s over 90 coaches have to take the responsibility for coaching more than 1,000 professional, semiprofessional and amateur athletes, resulting in ineffective training.

In particular, most coaches have yet to apply new technologies and training methods into their job because they did not have a chance to attend professional training courses .

Most notably, the city is facing a serve shortage of capital, so coaches have not been sent to train abroad in order to meet the increasing demand of training skilled athletes.

In attempting to solve the problems, the municipal Sports and Physical Training sector has reassigned some of the main coaches from managing to directly train athletes.

Importance will be attached to providing training courses on information technology and foreign language skills for coaches, as well as inviting sports experts to help coaches enhance their professional skills.

Mr Nguyen Trong Thao, Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, said his agency is planning to send coaches to train at home and abroad in order to enhance their job skills. Moreover, top priority will be given to sending young coaches to train abroad in the short and long terms.

“This is the most effective solution to meet the goals and requirements for the development of the city’s high performance sports”, Mr Hai underlined.

He added the training courses lasting between 1 and 2 years in foreign countries with advanced sports would help local coaches enhance their professional skills.

Mr Hai also highlighted the importance of facilitating local coaches to practise their job skills at international sports events in order to enhance their professional skills.

Most recently, swimming coach Pham Truong Giang has been sent to Hungary for a long-term training course at the invitation of the Hungarian Olympic Committee and the BVSC Zugló Swimming Club over the 2018-2020 period.
