Especially, the city has succeeded in training qualified athletes who have gained outstanding achievements in national athletics events.

In particular, the Da Nang team finished in 3rd place at the National Youth Athletics Championship 2018 with 4 golds, 6 silvers and 2 bronzes, after Ha Noi with 9 golds, 3 silvers and 6 bronzes medals, and the Military team with 6 golds, 3 silvers, and 6 bronzes.

Notably, the local sports sector has played a vital role in training and providing talented athletes for national squads. They have included race walkers Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc, Nguyen Thanh Ngung and Vo Xuan Vinh, hammer thrower Do Tan Truong, and hurdle runner Hoang Luc Kieu My.

In addition, there are some promising talented athletes such as discus thrower Vo Thu Bich Tram, triple jumpers Tran Thi Loan and Nguyen Thanh Ha, high jumper Nguyen Pham Hoai Yen, hurdle jumper Dinh Thi Thuy Trang, and hammer thrower Le Thi Nguyen Thuy.

Boasting many athletics talents, Da Nang is now very confident at the forthcoming National Sports Festival.

The most notable is the return of race walker Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc after a break for delivering her baby. Surprisingly, Thanh Phuc, Thanh Ngung and Xuan Vinh have no contenders in the women’s and men’s walking events.

According to walking coach Tran Anh Hiep, the athletics sector sets a goal of reaching 2 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals at the upcoming 8th National Sports Festival. In addition, race walkers target to conquer the men’s and women’s 10km walking events at next year’s SEA Games.

Mr Hiep stressed the need to build practicing grounds and install more exercise equipment, as well as send local athletes to train abroad in a bid to help them gain even more success at the upcoming national and international sports events.
