13th ASEAN Schools Games' flag raising ceremony held in Da Nang

The flag-raising ceremony was held at Da Nang’s Tien Son Sports Arena on Saturday morning to welcome sports delegations of 10 member countries to the 13th ASEAN Schools Games.

Speaking at the flag-raising ceremony, Da Nang People's Committee Vice Chairman Tran Chi Cuong said that Da Nang has been emerging as one of the leading destinations in Asia, and prided its stature as a city of events and festivals, and a gateway to world cultural heritage sites in Central Viet Nam.

He added “We are proud to represent Viet Nam to host the 13th ASEAN Schools Games. The hosting of the Games is a right, an obligation and a responsibility of the host country for the region. Da Nang will make every effort to best implement the requirements of the ASEAN Schools Sports Council and the Games’ organizing committee”.

The city's leaders and people will create favourable conditions for athletes to have attractive competitions, and enjoy exchange activities filled with solidarity and friendship with locals and tourists during the week-long competition, Mr. Cuong emphasised.

On the occasion, Mr. Nguyen Thanh De, Director of the Department of Physical Education under the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training cum Deputy Head of the Games’ Organizing Committee presented souvenirs to the heads of the sports delegations.

The 13th ASEAN Schools Games themed "Connect to shine bright" draws over 1,300 athletes and coaches from the sports delegations of 10 regional countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. The athletes compete in 107 events of swimming, athletics, badminton, basketball, pencak silat, and vovinam.

The opening ceremony of the Games will take place on the evening of June 1 at the Tien Son Sports Arena.
