Like thousands of other Da Nang pupils, children in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Phu Commune are eager to have new books, notebooks and clothes as they start their new school year.

The Hoa Phu Commune People’s Committee Vice Chairman, Mr Dang Huynh, said that his commune is one of the district’s poorest communes.  He explained that his commune now has 139 poor families, and 40 of them are living in Phu Tuc Village.  However, over the last 4 years, none of the children from the village’s poor families have dropped out of school.

The commune has a total of 852 school-age pupils in this academic year, of which 270 are junior high school pupils, 347 are primary school pupils, 253 attend kindergartens, and the remaining 88 are Co Tu ethnic pupils.

Apart from the efforts of their families and the encouragement of the communal authorities, the pupils have received active support from the city’s organisations and individuals through donation programmes for poor pupils.  The gifts donated have included books, notebooks, clothes, pens, and cash.

In addition, the Hoa Phu Commune’s Youth Organisation has frequently coordinated with the city’s colleges and universities to open summer classes to help local pupils to review their last academic year’s work.

Most of the pupils are children from families in difficult circumstances.  Therefore, their current greatest need is to receive sets of textbooks to help them study better.
