IAEA Director General visits Viet Nam

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived in Viet Nam on January 7 to discuss measures to promote cooperation in the field of atomic energy between two sides.

The second visit to Viet Nam by Yukia Amano will take place from January 7 to 11. The first time he went to Viet Nam was in October 2011.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the visit of the IAEA Director General to Viet Nam will focus on evaluating the effectiveness of projects funded by IAEA and exchange of measures to promote cooperation between the two sides in the field of development of nuclear energy application in general and nuclear power program--in Viet Nam in particular.

Yukia Amano will meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and worked with a number of relevant agencies in Viet Nam, such as the Ministry of Science and Technology , the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ninh Thuan province, Viet Nam Electricity Group (EVN), the Department of Radiation and Nuclear Safety, the Nuclear Energy Department, Bach Mai Hospital and visit the construction site of the first nuclear power plants of Viet Nam.

During his last visit, the head of the IAEA stated that he believed in Viet Nam’s success in the field of nuclear power.

The IAEA is an intergovernmental international organization which plays a central role in international cooperation to promote the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, for improving people's lives, ensuring energy security, food security and environmental protection.

Viet Nam joined the IAEA in 1978 and has always had good cooperation with this organization. Cooperative relations between Viet Nam and the IAEA have made positive steps. Viet Nam is currently the Chairman of the IAEA Board of Governors in the 2013-2014 term.
