On Tuesday, Youth Union organisations of Da Nang’s Hai Chau District and the Duy Tan University (DTU) jointly tested the operation of a robot at the intersection of Le Thanh Nghi and Phan Dang Luu streets.

Designed by a group of some 3rd year students from DTU’s Faculty of Electricity and Electronics, the robot can take pedestrians across roads and warn any who go beyond the stop line.  The robot features an AVR microcontroller and ultrasonic sensor to detect vehicles.

Once operational, the robot will be placed on pavements where there are a large number of pedestrians.  It will deliver an invitation in English and Vietnamese to help pedestrians cross the road when they are 1.5m away from it.  Those in need of help are asked to push the red button on the robot, and it will automatically start to help them to cross the road quickly or slowly depending on the traffic flow.  The robot will say goodbye to the pedestrians when it has finished its job and return to its initial position.
