The British Council in Viet Nam has opened an English course for military officers in Ho Chi Minh City.

Newswire Vietnamplus reported Monday that the nine-month course, which kicked off the same day, provides 18 officers from the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense with English skills necessary for various fields.

Those participants who achieve high results at the end of the course will be able to study in further courses in other advanced military command training programs run by the UK.

As part of a cooperation program between the defense ministries of Viet Nam and the UK, the English course is expected to provide training for more than 70 officers in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City by the end of this year.

The course was initiated in 2012, funded by the UK Ministry of Defense, and has trained over 100 Vietnamese military officers so far.

The British Council is the UK’s international organization for cultural relations and educational opportunities, according to its website.

It works in more than 100 countries and has 8,000 staff – including 2,000 teachers – work with thousands of professionals and policymakers and millions of young people every year by teaching English, sharing the arts and delivering education and society programs, the website says.
