Viet Nam vows to reduce 8 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 with its internal resources, and would pledge an additional 25 percent if it is to receive international support.

The commitment is included in the country’s report on intended nationally-determined contributions (INDC) to coping with climate change, said Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Tran Hong Ha at a conference in Ha Noi on October 12 to announce the report, which was submitted to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change on September 30.

Viet Nam also vows to carry out more adaptation activities to increase its resilience to climate change in the INDC report, which is part of efforts to build a new global agreement on climate change with the aim to keep the global temperature rise by less than 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the 21^st century.

Nguyen Khac Hieu, Deputy Head of the Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change, said that Viet Nam’s INDC report, scheduled to be in effect until 2030, provides basic information about domestic contributions to greenhouse gas emission reductions and climate change adaptation.

Contributions to gas emission reduction efforts focus on energy, transport and agriculture, while contributions to climate change adaptation target agriculture, water resources, and forestry in delta, coastal, mountainous and urban areas.
