An elderly woman has recovered from surgery in a southern Viet Nam province to remove a giant tumor from her stomach.

The surgery to remove a large tumor in the stomach of 100-year-old Nguyen Thi Chien of Dinh Quan District, Dong Nai Province, at the province's General Hospital is a success, Dr. Ngo Duc De from the surgery department announced on Wednesday.

The 13kg tumor was comprised of 12kg of solid mass and one kg of liquid.  Its large size caused it to occupy her entire abdomen, resulting in inflammation in her legs as the blood vessels in her lower limbs were blocked.

Chien’s family also noted that the tumor severely affected her ability to breathe while laying down.

While Chien’s family discovered the tumor growing in her stomach two years ago, they decided not to operate because of her old age and the tumor’s small size.

On Monday, Chien was hospitalised when her stomach grew abnormally big and her legs became swollen and inflamed.

After multiple consultations and examinations, doctors decided to carry out the tumorectomy on Wednesday.

After three hours of operation, the tumor was successfully removed.

Chien is now able to talk and begin recovery and the tumor is currently being examined for further diagnosis, said the hospital’s surgeons.
